A Minnesota woman took out a few bad pears from her fridge and left them outside for the squirrels – one of which was captured on home video appearing drunk on the fermented fruit.
“The old pears I had left out for the squirrels had apparently fermented. Oops! ” she says.
Katy Morlok, who took the video, told Minneapolis-based Fox 9 that the squirrel first ate a little and then ran away. But when he returned he was clearly intoxicated. Once she realized what was going on, she removed the forbidden fruit.

Its video shows the creature in an apparent stupor, wobbling on its skin paws with its front paws in the fruit bowl over the weekend.
The squirrel appears to be wobbling and swaying, its feet still on a block of wood. But his head begins to tilt on one side, then break on the other.
“These pears were so old, I bet they fermented,” she told the station. “And then he got drunk, and I didn’t want to do that.” So I went out and grabbed all the pears.

The squirrel, whom she described as a frequent backyard visitor named “Lil Red,” appeared to have recovered from her frenzy the next day.
“In the morning he came back for his hangover breakfast and he’s been fine ever since,” she told the station.
Sugars in fruit can ferment in the refrigerator if exposed to yeast.

The discarded fermented fruit has been linked to similar incidents in the past, including a packet of drunken raccoons spotted in Canada last fall and another packet in West Virginia that authorities initially suspected had rabies – for discover that they had been buzzed over crab apples.
