LOS ANGELES – A jury awarded $ 23.3 million to a California pepper maker in a fierce battle with the world-famous Sriracha hot sauce maker.

The Los Angeles Times said juries had determined last week that Huy Fong Foods had breached its contract with Underwood Ranches and had also committed fraud.

Underwood, based in Camarillo, was Sriracha's only supplier of hot peppers for nearly three decades, until 2017, when the partnership collapsed as a result of a financial dispute.

A lawyer representing Huy Fong Foods said the company based in Irwindale would fight against this decision. The company currently buys its peppers from various farms in California, New Mexico and Mexico.

Craig Underwood said that his farm had been forced to lay off 45 people, but that she was recovering and had even launched her own range of sauces.
