A man from Missouri was charged with murder Tuesday for the alleged murder of his wife after a non-profit group filed bail in a domestic violence case, prosecutors said.

Samuel Lee Scott, 54, was charged with first degree murder in the death of his 54-year-old wife, Marcia Johnson, several hours after his release in a domestic violence case involving the woman.

Scott had been imprisoned on charges of assaulting him and allegedly punching Johnson in the face and threatening to "finish what he started" in January. The St. Louis surety bill released its $ 5,000 bond on April 9, according to court documents obtained by The Associated Press.

Johnson died Sunday, five days after Scott's release.

Scott, who had previously been convicted of drugs and assault, admitted to punching Johnson, the police said.
