A Winter Garden Theater stagehand died Nov. 12, while working at the Broadway site, after falling from scaffolding above the stage around 8:45 a.m.
A representative of the Shubert organization, which owns and operates the Broadway and 50th Street Theater, confirmed the incident. Both NYPD and OSHA were at the scene after the tragic event to investigate the circumstances.
According to the New York Post, where the incident was first reported, the worker was cleaning up all of the Beetlejuice, which operated at the Winter Garden until the shutdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The 54-year-old was taken to St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital but could not be resuscitated.
The theater – like every other house on Broadway – will remain dark until at least May 30, 2021. Cover of Scott Rudin, produced by The man of music aims to start performances on December 20 next year before opening on February 10, 2022 (it was originally scheduled to open in October). The machinist was not an employee of any particular production.
