A rising star bull rider from Brazil died at the rodeo Sunday in Fresno, Calif., From injuries he sustained after being stepped on by a bull.
Amadeu Campos Silva, 22, was competing in the second round of the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) Velocity Tour event at the Save Mart Center when he was pushed back from a bull named Classic Man just 5.31 seconds after the start of the race.
He was thrown to the ground and sustained chest injuries after the bull’s hind legs landed on his chest. Bulls in competition typically weigh between 1,500 and 2,000 pounds.
Silva was taken to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno where he was pronounced dead, as reported by USA Today, just three days before his 23rd birthday.
PBR breeding manager Cody Lambert said he saw the accident and told USA Today: “When he came out his spur got tangled and it knocked him over just under the back leg of the man. Taurus. It’s just a truly abnormal and tragic accident.
Andrew Giangola, a spokesperson for PBR, agreed and said there was no indication the bull had done anything wrong. “It was not an act of aggression,” he said.
“The bull reared up in its normal pattern. Amadeu’s spur caught in the flank rope and he was pulled under the bull in a freak accident, ”Giangola added.
Silva lived in Sunset, Texas, where he moved with his parents after joining PBR’s US tours. The Brazilian native was part of the PBR Brazil team in 2017 and 2018.

He started riding bulls at the age of 16 and was the one to watch this year after competing in the 2020 PBR World Finals. The Velocity Tour he competed in last weekend is just one step below the fastest lap. from PBR, the Unleash The Beast Series.
PBR said in a statement: “Amadeu fought hard and was a rising star in our sport. Our hearts are breaking for his family and friends.
“The whole PBR and Western sport family express their thoughts, prayers and heartfelt condolences to Amadeu’s family and friends,” the PBR wrote in an Instagram post.
This is not the first time that this dangerous sport has tragically claimed a victim.
In 2020, a member of the Oklahoma State University (OSU) rodeo team died after being injured when he was run over by a bull at the PRCA Pro Rodeo of the Palo Pinto County Livestock Association.
Rowdy Swanson, 20, rode a bull named Gritty before suffering fatal injuries.
One person who saw video of the crash said Gritty’s rear legs appeared to descend on Swanson just after he hit the ground.

The PBR posted a statement on Instagram expressing its “thoughts, prayers and sincere condolences to the family and friends of Amadeu”
“With a heavy and aching heart, I am saddened to report that the OSU rodeo team has lost one of our own,” coach Cody Hollingsworth said in a statement about Rowdy Swanson.
“He was a big part of our rodeo family and he will be sorely missed. Our hearts go out to the Swanson family at this time, ”he added.
A year before Mason Lowe, 25, died at the National Western Stock Show in Denver after a bull stomped on his chest during competition.
Lowe, from Missouri, was wearing a mandatory protective vest when he was kicked out of his bull, named Hard Times, and the beast’s hind legs fell to his chest.
He was ranked 18th in the world and was able to stand for a while before grabbing his chest and collapsing. He was taken to hospital where he died.
Hard Times the bull continued to compete in the circuit.
