CBS

CBS and Amazon announced Monday that a next Star Trek derived series, which has Patrick Stewart taking over his role as Jean-Luc Picard, will be broadcast on Amazon Prime Video internationally 24 hours after the broadcast of episodes in the US on the subscription streaming service of the CBS channel All Access.

Note: CBS is the parent company of CNET.

This is not the first time that CBS has entered into an agreement of this type with Amazon. Starting in 2012, CBS agreed to let Amazon broadcast part of its summer programming: Stephen King's supernatural mystery. Under the dome and sci-fi movie Halle Berry Existing – on the Prime video four days after the broadcast of broadcasts in the United States on its eponymous network.

At the time, CBS boasted that these international agreements with Amazon were essentially paying for each season of shows before anyone watched a single episode.

The companies said that their multi-year agreement would make the Picard series available for distribution on Amazon in more than 200 countries and territories, with the exception of the United States and Canada. Each episode will be available on Amazon Prime Video in those areas within 24 hours of its first appearance in the United States.

The still untitled Picard series, due out in late 2019, will be a leap in time compared to the other CBS All Access Star Trek program, the prequel Discovery, at the next stage of Picard's journey after the next generation. Discovery producer Alex Kurtzman, author Michael Chabon and Stewart himself are among the executive producers. The first two episodes will be directed by screenwriter and director Hanelle Culpepper.
