Unless you are a hardcore animation fan you probably don’t know the name Tom kane, but there’s a very good chance you’ve heard his voice in the past 25 years. Tom Kane is probably best known for voicing Jedi Master Yoda in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and various others Star wars animated television shows and video games. Sadly, the voice actor suffered a stroke in November, leaving him virtually unable to speak.
Deadline brought our attention to a post on Tom Kane’s Facebook page yesterday from his daughter Sam. The post reads:
“Hi everyone! This is Tom’s daughter Sam. Our family wanted to explain why my dad was MIA. About two months ago he had a stroke on his left side which left him with right side weakness and damage. in the speech center of his brain. This means that at the moment he cannot communicate effectively verbally, neither read nor spell. He is still competent and very himself, but can only put out a few words at the moment. As many of you may know about stroke, it is possible for her to regain these functions and we have found her excellent care in Kansas City for speech, occupational therapy and physiotherapy, but for Right now, his neurologist warned us that he can no longer do a voiceover.
My father is always in a good mood and his extreme stubbornness has helped him to show improvements in speech already. He fully agrees with me to share this and he will see anything you post.
It is truly tragic. Tom Kane is loved throughout the voiceover community, and he’s been working steadily for 25 years now. This year alone, he reprized his roles as Yoda and the series narrator of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, not to mention playing Jedi Master in The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special and the next video game LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. He voiced Yoda in Star wars projects since The clone wars Genndy Tartakovsky’s animated series in 2003. Kane even made the leap into Star Wars Live by voicing Admiral Ackbar for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Apart from the endless work that Tom Kane has done in Star wars media, the actor also played Ultron in the Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Professor Utonium in the two iterations of The Powerpuff Girls, Magneto in various X Men animated series and video games, Darwin en Wild Thornberrys, and Woodhouse / Hans Hessler in over a dozen episodes of Archer. Kane was also hired to emulate the late Donald Pleasance in voiceover as Dr Samuel Loomis in Halloween h20. His work also extends to massive video game franchises like Call of Duty and Batman: Arkham, and he even took the lead of the LEGO Indiana Jones 2008 video game. Additionally, there have been dozens of movie trailers with its narration.
Although doctors have warned that Tom Kane may never do a voiceover again, anything is possible. We know Kane will fight to regain his communication, and where there is a will, there is a way. There have been a lot of miraculous recoveries in cases like this, and we hope Tom Kane gets the chance to be a part of it. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope we haven’t heard the last of Kane’s many characters.
