Entering a copy of the newspaper in your favorite café is a thing of the past, at least if you're dating Starbucks.

The coffee chain will stop selling USA TODAY, as well as the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal in more than 8,600 stores in the United States in September. Starbucks has sold The Times since 2000 and other newspapers since 2010. The New York Post has first announced Starbucks' decision to abandon the newspapers.

This decision is due to the decline in in-store newspaper sales.

"We are constantly looking for what we offer our customers in our stores and are adjusting our portfolio according to the changing behavior of our customers," said the spokeswoman. of Starbucks, Sanja Gould. As part of our ongoing efforts to improve the overall experience in our stores for partners and customers, we are removing some devices from our retail lobby in September. "

These fixtures include shelves with coffee beans and snacks, although these items are available elsewhere in the store.

Newspapers will not necessarily be distributed at all Starbucks locations. Approved institutions in hospitals, universities and other institutions could continue to sell newspapers because they are not managed by the coffee chain itself.

The company has sought to simplify and reduce the number of products included in the store, including cups and specialty beverages, based on customer purchases.

Although Java and journalism have been a classic marriage for generations, smells and smears of newsprint are in decline. While some newspapers add digital subscribers, weekday newspaper circulation has declined by more than half since its peak in the mid-1980s.

The Times said it was "disappointed" and the Journal confirmed that Starbucks was halting print sales. Nobody was immediately available to comment on Gannett.

This is not the first time that Starbucks has decided that old media was spending too much for its coffees. He abandoned the sale of CDs – remember? – back in 2015 ..
