Stare in awe of record podium record in Silverstone position of Valtteri Bottas

Wow, Wow, Wow. The qualifying for the British Grand Prix this morning was not particularly breathtaking, but Mercedes proved it was back in the lead by setting a new lap record for Silverstone. Valtteri Bottas stormed the circuit to produce not only pole position, but also to erase the pole time achieved by Lewis Hamilton in 2018 (1: 25.892) with a new lap record of the current configuration of Silverstone. Bottas's time was 1: 25.093.

Bottas beat his teammate Hamilton to the line by only .003 seconds. The Ferrari, Charles Leclerc, also managed to be a few hundredths of a second and will start the race in third position on the grid.

My favorite part of this integrated video is the section of the .gif file above, the Maggots, Becketts, Chapel Curve segment. I think these cars have enough support to negotiate that part of the track so quickly.

Interestingly, Bottas' lap time has been produced with only one really fast sector. His sectors 1 and 3 did not even beat his personal best, while only sector 2 was strong enough to make the round. These drivers only work on very thin margins. It's pretty amazing in a way that seems exciting during qualifying, and usually incredibly boring during the race.
