The idea of Teslas being connected to the internet via Starlink may soon become a reality, as SpaceX recently filed an application with the FCC to extend satellite service to “moving vehicles, ships and aircraft”. The app comes shortly after Musk nodded on Twitter for a Starlink “Mini,” which could provide internet connectivity on the go.
In its FCC application, SpaceX sought to acquire a global license authorizing the operation of end-user earth stations to deploy referred to as Vehicle Mounted Earth Stations (“VMES”), Ship Earth Stations (“ESV”) and Earth Stations. on board. Aircraft (“ESAA”). Collectively referred to as Earth Stations in Motion (“ESIM”), these stations are said to have the ability to bring Internet connectivity to moving vehicles like cars, ships or even aircraft.
“SpaceX Services is seeking approval to deploy and operate these earth stations (1) as VMES across the United States and its territories, (2) as an ESV in United States territorial waters and within international waters around the world, and (3) as an ESAA on US registered aircraft operating worldwide and on unregistered aircraft operating in US airspace, ”noted SpaceX.
In elaborating further, SpaceX noted that Starlink ESIMs could be invaluable as internet users are increasingly reluctant to forgo web connectivity when traveling. SpaceX said that ultimately, the idea of Starlink being used to move vehicles is a logical extension of the basic satellite Internet system services.
“Users are no longer willing to forgo connectivity while on the move, whether it’s driving a truck across the country, moving cargo from Europe to a US port, or on a domestic or international flight. . To meet this demand, SpaceX deployed an innovative, cost-effective and spectrum-efficient satellite system capable of delivering robust broadband service to customers around the world, especially in unserved and underserved areas.
“SpaceX has already obtained US clearance for the space station components of its NGSO system. This application takes the next step by seeking authorization from ESIMs which will allow this network to be extended from homes and offices to vehicles, ships and aircraft. Operation under the requested general license will promote competition in the moving broadband market, to the benefit of drivers, vessel operators and air travelers in the United States and internationally. “
Starlink’s ESIMs would benefit many entities, including Tesla, Elon Musk’s electric vehicle and energy company. Tesla’s electric cars are connected to the internet for features like video streaming and live updates, with the company even offering a “Premium Connectivity” service today. With Starlink’s ability to connect to the internet in a moving vehicle, Tesla would no longer have to rely on existing mobile internet providers for its cars.
