Start ‘Em, Sit’ Em is the ultimate look at the best and worst PPR based scoring system clashes in fantasy football. This column will not cover elite NFL players like Patrick Mahomes, Christian McCaffrey, Davante Adams or Travis Kelce. Instead, I’m going to look at which players you have the most questions about to help you define the most effective starting roster possible. For all of your final fantasy roster decisions, be sure to check out my weekly player rankings which will be updated daily throughout the 2021 NFL season.
Week 3 Start ‘Em: Quarterbacks
Beginning of the week
Justin Herbert at Chiefs (1 p.m. ET, CBS): Herbert averaged 14.1 points in his first two games of the season, which ranks him outside the top 20 among all quarterbacks. I would keep the faith though, as penalties and drops were partly to blame for his slow statistical start. Herbert should put on a great line against the Chiefs, who gave him six total touchdowns and 55.2 points in two games of 2020.

• TEAM DEFENSES
Start them
Jalen Hurts at Cowboys (Mon, 8:15 p.m. ET, ESPN): Hurts has had an impressive start to the season for fantasy managers, averaging over 25 fantasy points in his first two games. He should be successful against a Cowboys defense that has averaged nearly 19 fantastic points per game to enemy quarterbacks in their last nine games. They also allowed the 10th most rushing yards to the post during that time.
Matthew Stafford vs. Buccaneers (4:25 p.m. ET, FOX): Stafford had a mediocre stat line a week ago, scoring just 17.2 points in a win over the Colts. I would keep him in the rosters this week as his next clash against the Buccaneers could be a shootout. The over / under opened at 54.5, and Tampa Bay gave up five touchdown passes and nearly 22 fantastic points to opposing quarterbacks in their first two games of 2021.
Daniel Jones vs. Falcons (1 p.m. ET, FOX): Was I a season too early to call Jones a sleeper in 2020? It is possible, as he ranks in the top five for fantastic points at quarterback after two weeks. He would be even better ranked if it weren’t for the penalties and drops too. Next on the schedule is a date with the Falcons, who have averaged over 29 fantastic points per game to enemy signalers in their first two games.
Teddy Bridgewater vs. Jets (4:05 p.m. ET, CBS): Teddy Two Gloves looked great in his first two games with the Broncos, throwing four no-pick touchdowns averaging nearly 21 points per game. He will be a fixture in the two-quarterback leagues against the Jets, who have allowed 18 touchdown passes and an average of more than 21 points to the field generals in their last nine games dating back to 2020.
More departures
- Sam Darnold at the Texans (Thursday, 8:20 p.m. ET, NFL)

Week 3 Sit ‘Em: Quarterbacks
Seat of the week
Joe Burrow at Steelers (1 p.m. ET, CBS): The Steelers caved in to Derek Carr last week, but their defense also lost three important defensive players. I would always be wary of the game against Burrow, who threw three interceptions in last week’s loss to the Bears. Plus, just two quarterbacks have scored more than 18 points against the Steelers in their last nine games at Heinz Field since last season.
Sit down
Ben Roethlisberger vs. Bengals (1 p.m. ET, CBS): I’m not sure about you, but Big Ben looked, well, unimpressive in his first two starts. It will be hard to trust him against the Bengals, who have been deviously formidable against quarterbacks. Their defense has averaged just 219.2 passing yards and fantastic 16.1 points to opposing signalers in their last nine games dating back to last season.
Matt Ryan at the Giants (1 p.m. ET, FOX): Ryan and the Falcons’ offense looked terrible for the second week in a row and has averaged 15.5 points so far. This week’s game against the Giants isn’t great either, as their defense has allowed the opposing quarterbacks less than 17 fantasy points on average in their last nine games. Unless you’re in a two-quarterback league, Ryan has to be on the bench.

Jameis Winston at the Patriots (1 p.m. ET, FOX): Cheat on me once, shame on you, cheat on me twice, shame on me. I won’t let Winston go wrong again as he looked great in week one only to display a huge stench in his next game. It’s vintage Winston. I’d keep him on the sidelines against the Patriots, who have allowed just nine touchdown passes and a fantastic 15.5-point average to enemy quarterbacks in their last nine games.
Jared Goff vs. Ravens (1 p.m. ET, CBS): The decision to seat Goff may seem odd on paper, as the Ravens have allowed the sixth-most fantastic quarterback points in two games. However, their defense faced a scorching Derek Carr in a shootout and superstar Patrick Mahomes in his first two games, so you can understand the high stat totals. Goff is clearly not on the same level and should be on the fringes of the fantasy this week.
