State Department spokesman Ned Price clashed with a reporter during a White House press briefing on Monday.
The tense exchange erupted as Price bragged about the administration’s efforts to cut the controversial Nord Stream 2 pipeline from Russia to Germany.
Price said 18 companies, mostly Westerners, had made “good faith efforts to reduce” their involvement in Nord Stream 2.
“It shows that legislative goals and our actions are having a good effect,” Price said of America’s bipartisan opposition to the project dating back to the days of former President Donald Trump.
Associated Press reporter Matt Lee then intervened.
“You’ve only been in the job for a month, haven’t you? Are you telling me that in the last four weeks these 18 companies have suddenly decided to say, “Oh my God! We better do nothing with Nord Stream 2, ”said Lee.
“You take credit for what the previous administration did. Yes or no?”
Price and Lee chatted for several seconds, before the State Department spokesperson could say he was simply speaking on behalf of those who work in the department he represents.
“The people who worked this, the people who are working this now, were the same people a month ago, were the same people three months ago,” Price said.
