North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson (right) backs comments he made over the summer targeting the LGBTQ community.
“There’s no reason anyone anywhere in America should tell a kid about transgender, homosexuality, all that filth,” Robinson said during comments at Asbury Baptist Church in Seagrove, North Carolina, in June.
“And yes, I called it dirt, and if you don’t like it I called it dirt, come see me and I’ll explain it to you.”
In a video posted on Facebook SaturdayRobinson defended his comments, saying he “will not be silenced and I will not be forced to submit” while noting that his remarks were aimed at what children are taught in schools rather than infringement of rights.
“I will continue to fight for the rights of our children to receive an education free from sexual concepts that do not belong to the classroom. “
Robinson added “to fight and protect the rights of all citizens, including those of the LGBTQ community[+] community to express themselves as they wish ”, noting that it is not“ the role of the government to tell them otherwise ”.

Heads of state were quick to condemn Robinson’s initial remarks and some called on the lieutenant governor to step down.
“Treating a lot of your own voters as ‘garbage’ means you have no intention of representing them,” the Democratic state senator said. Jeff Jackson wrote on Twitter. “Our lieutenant governor should step down and allow someone who is ready to do the job to take his place. It wasn’t a dog whistle, folks. It was old-fashioned hatred.
Andrew Bates Deputy White House Press Secretary called Robinsons comments in June “repulsive and offensive”.
