State Soldier James J. Monda dies after slipping beneath the surface of Grand Lac Sacandaga

James J. Monda entered the water on a boat launch in the town of Northampton, state police say


NORTHAMPTON – An 18-year-old State Police veteran died Sunday after slipping underwater on a boat launch while working on Grand Lac Sacandaga, announced Monday after- noon State Police Superintendent Kevin P. Bruen.

Private James J. Monda entered the water during a launch on Bunker Hill Road around 4 p.m. Sunday and did not resurface, state police said in a statement.

He was removed from the water and taken to Nathan Littauer Hospital where he died.

Monda, 45, joined the State Police in 2002 and has spent most of his career with G Troop. He was recently posted to the Princetown Barracks.

State Police said he is survived by his fiancee and parents.
