It's been a little less than 48 hours since the dust settled inside the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, and now former heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier has had time to think about his defeat at home. KO by Stipe Miocic (highlights). more.
Despite the defeat, "DC" showed courage and professionalism by attending the post-fight press conference and answering all the questions that were put to him. He even took the time to do a post-fight interview with Joe Rogan immediately after the fight.
On both occasions, Cormier was not engaged in his future as a fighter, nor would he actually retire from mixed martial arts (MMA). And earlier in the day (Monday, August 19, 2019), "DC" is directed to social media to issue a statement following his defeat.
"It's been a few days and I can not stress the disappointment, I'm really sorry for everything I dropped. I'm sorry for my wife and children. I never wanted you to see that and the pain you caused breaks my heart every time I think about it, "Daniel said on Instagram.
"My coaches, I'm sorry, I appreciate the work and the time you spent with me. My fans, thank you guys for all the love and support you have for guiding me to all these incredible achievements. Stipe Miocic and his team, congratulations on this fantastic victory, you have shown so much heart and courage, you are defining Cleveland difficult, "he added.
"Dana White and all the members of the UFC thank you for everything you have done for me and my family. This has been the most incredible trip, I'll decide what I'm going to do now and as soon as I decide, you'll know right away. I love you all. DC. "
Defeat was only "the second" of his MMA career – not to mention his loss to Jon Jones in UFC 214, which was later declared non-contest (NC) – and the first in heavyweights . What makes the pill a bit harder to swallow is that the former UFC champion champion was on the scoreboard for the fourth round and was apparently on his way to another victory over Stipe.
But in the blink of an eye, Miocic returned the tables and placed it on "DC" to retrieve his strap. Much to Jon Jones's pleasure, of course.
At age 40, Cormier does not have much to prove inside the cage: he has won several titles and received praise that many can only dream of. That said, the former 265 and 205-pound champion has already said he will not leave the sport on his back.
