STATEN ISLAND, NY – Borough veterans eligible for a coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine can now get vaccinated at the Staten Island VA clinic, saving them a trip to Brooklyn VA Medical Center.
Representative Nicole Malliotakis (R-Staten Island / South Brooklyn) announced that the clinic, located at 1150 South Ave. in Bloomfield, will begin vaccination on Tuesday, January 26.
Vaccination appointments will be available Tuesday through Thursday for high risk veterans and veterans aged 65 and over. Appointments can be made by calling 877-877-9267. Appointments for the second doses will be made at the same time.
Malliotakis said opening additional vaccination sites to speed up the distribution process was one of his priorities.
“By donating vaccines to the Staten Island clinic, we save veterans a trip to Brooklyn VA Medical Center and the toll that goes with it,” Malliotakis said.
“I encourage veterans who are eligible and wish to receive the vaccine to make an appointment for the vaccination as soon as possible. The sooner our community can be immunized, the faster we can reopen our economy, get residents back to work and reduce the number of deaths, ”she said.
Lee Covino, treasurer of the United Staten Island Veterans Organization, said giving veterans the opportunity to get vaccinated on Staten Island is good news.
“Many Staten Island veterans – many of whom are frail and have difficulty traveling – have to take public transportation to Brooklyn Medical Center in freezing weather. I hope the veterans take advantage of this more practical opportunity, ”said Covino.
Vaccination appointments can also be made at Brooklyn VA Medical Center for those who are interested; the clinic is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.
