States destroy Covid-19 records as US reports more than 10.5 million cases and 240,000 deaths

U.S. states continue to break records for coronavirus cases and hospitalizations as the country reports more than 10.5 million infections and at least 242,310 deaths, according to figures from Johns Hopkins University (JHU).

JHU reported 89206 new cases and 400 dead to date in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and other U.S. territories, as well as repatriated cases.

Here are some of the striking numbers:

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania reported its largest daily increase in Covid-19 cases on Thursday, with 5 488 new infections and 49 death, according to the state health ministry.

The statewide total now stands at 248,856 The Covid-19 cases and about 13,202 of the total cases involve healthcare workers, the statement said.

Total number of deaths in the state attributed to Covid-19 stands at 9 194.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health has reported 2,080 people hospitalized for Covid-19, including 438 in intensive care units. Most inpatients are 65 years of age or older, and most deaths are in patients 65 years of age or older.

Utah

State reported 3 884 new cases of Covid-19 on Thursday – a new record that is a significant jump from the previous high, shows its data dashboard. Utah also hit record levels in its 7-day average Covid-19 cases and percentage of test positivity.

Utah’s previous record for new Covid-19 cases, 2989, was set on November 5.

Rise in infections brought seven-day average of new cases to a record 2,738.4 case. This measure has been progressing fairly regularly since the beginning of October. The percentage of positive tests in Utah also reached a record 23.21% after having jumped since October 11.

Greg Bell, president of the Utah Hospital Association, said the state was short of intensive care beds and the state had “seriously started moving patients about 10 days ago” from full capacity hospitals.

New Jersey

The state reached its highest Covid-19 hospitalization rate since June 4 with 1,827 to the hospital. Since Monday, the state has seen 10,472 new cases, which Governor Phil Murphy deemed “austere and sobering”

Murphy announced 3 517 new Covid-19 boxes, 18 death, and a positivity rate of 12.02%. There is 360 Covid-19 patients in intensive care, the highest rate since June 12.

Department of Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli said if New Jersey continues on this trajectory, it will return to the state it was in in the spring.

Murphy said vacation gatherings should be limited to immediate family or household.

Over the past week, there have been 15 school outbreaks and 46 new Covid-19 infections, which Murphy said was far below what he and his staff expected.

Wisconsin

Covid-19 “is getting worse” across the state, a senior health official said as Wisconsin reached nearly 7,500 new cases on Thursday.

the 7,497 new cases bring the state total to 293,388Julie Willems Van Dijk, assistant secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, said at a press conference. She also announced 58 new deaths bringing the state total to 2,515.

“Covid-19 is everywhere in our state. It’s bad everywhere, and it’s getting worse everywhere,” she said. “It puts a strain on hospitals and people are dying.”

Van Dijk said that only 8% intensive care beds are available statewide and hospitals are struggling to find staff, in part because staff are sick or in quarantine.

The seven-day moving average of new cases is 6,209, Said Van Dijk. She said Wisconsin had 1,000 more cases a day than New York at the height of the pandemic.

New York

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a press release on Thursday that the state’s positivity rate was 2.95% and 29 more people have died from the coronavirus in 24 hours.

In the state’s “micro-cluster” focal areas, the test positivity rate is 4.86%.

The governor said the next few weeks were going to be “key”, with Covid raging nationwide.

“There is no predestined future here. It is a pure consequence of our actions. If we stay in New York Tough and don’t fall subject to COVID fatigue and we stay smart over the holidays, on Thanksgiving, at Christmas, at Hanukkah, we are going to keep it under control, ”he said in a statement.
