Working from home and job losses caused by the Covid-19 pandemic have prompted many Americans to pack their bags and travel to other states in 2020.
Those who rented one-way U-Hauls have been to states like Tennessee, Texas, Florida and Ohio, according to a new report from the company.
U-Haul’s annual Migration Trends report calculates the number of one-way U-Haul vehicles entering a state compared to the number of vehicles leaving each calendar year. For the 2020 report, data was met from more than 2 million U-Haul one-way rental customer transactions.
In 2020, Tennessee won first place for the most one-way U-Haul arrivals compared to first-ever departures. Arrivals accounted for 50.6% of all one-way U-Haul traffic in Tennessee, according to U-Haul, a 12% increase from last year. Meanwhile, departures only increased 9% compared to 2019.
Florida, who came first in 2019, came third.
Texas, which ranks among the top two states with the most one-way arrivals since 2015, was No. 2 in 2020. Florida, first in 2019, fell to third.
California ranks bottom on the 2020 list, behind Illinois and New Jersey, as the states with the fewest one-way arrivals. California has been in the bottom three states since 2016, and Illinois has been in the bottom two since 2015, when U-Haul began ranking states.
“I see a lot of people from California moving [to Tennessee] because they are drawn to our lifestyle, “Jeff Porter, president of the U-Haul Company of Nashville said in a statement. Tennessee also has no income tax, many jobs and is business-friendly, Porter said.
