Last month, Valve officially unveiled its surprise Nintendo Switch-style handheld game console, the Steam Deck. Named after its SteamOS, the device appears to be a strong competitor to the Switch, offering access to Steam’s huge digital library. However, gamers are now wondering how portable the device really is.
We already knew it was on the plus size, but with “hands-on” play sessions now being offered to the media, we’re seeing the first direct comparisons between the Steam Deck and the Switch. As you would expect, at 298mm x 117mm x 49mm it’s much bulkier, although there are some similarities in the design as well (see the best Nintendo Switch deals to try out this latest device for yourself).

The Verge’s Sean Hollister posted a side-by-side comparison on Twitter, noting that the Steam Deck is “ginormous” compared to the Switch. The comparison also shows similarities in designs and range of ports on the two devices.
We noted last month that Valve’s Steam Deck might be the closest thing to seeing the Nintendo Switch Pro rumored this year after the disappointing reveal of the OLED Switch, which launches tomorrow (August 10). It certainly trumps the Switch in internal specs, but it’s also become clear how much bigger it is. Video producer Jan Ochoa took it a step further and compared the size of Valve’s device to that of the Sega Game Gear, PlayStation Vita, and classic Nintendo console, the Game Boy Advance (see below) .

The comparisons have made some question the value of the Steam Deck. “I don’t understand why you would carry a steam bridge. It seems as difficult to transport as a laptop, if not more,” one person said. tweeted. “Literally a couch and a toilet and a bed console. I can’t take it anywhere”, another wrote.
While we’re not sure if this is something we would take with us to play on the bus, it should be noted that the device is still lighter and smaller than most laptops, let alone a lot less. pricey than most gaming laptops, with prices starting at $ 399 / £ 349. Hollister in his report for The Verge also noted that despite the extra size and weight of 225g, the Valve console was more comfortable to hold than the Switch. Either way, the device has already proven to be a success. It’s due to ship in December, but reservations are already sold out until mid-2022.
