Valve has announced the creation of a new section of its service, dubbed Steam Labs, which will allow users to test various ongoing projects of the company and give their opinion. For starters, the company launches three experiments, but others will be added later.
The three launch experiences are Micro Trailers, Interactive Recommender and Automated Show. Micro Trailers are (as you might expect) six-second ultra-short game caravans. The interactive recommender uses machine learning to recommend new games based on the games you have played the most. The automated show is a half-hour presentation of the latest Steam games, generated by the Steam algorithm.
While movie trailers and automated shows focus on presenting video clips in one way or another, the Interactive Recommender is customized for each user. Valve states that the model relies on millions of Steam users and that you can filter the results using a series of sliders. But in a little behind the scenes information, Valve also explained that it was not sending any data on the game in the system, except for the release date. Instead, machine learning will collect data and determine similarities, as well as trends in buying patterns of players with similar playing tastes. The new recommended will not replace the current recommendations on Steam, as it is currently in the development phase.
Valve stated that she wanted to receive feedback from users, including the laboratory experiments that deserve to be deepened and how to develop them. He has also opened a dedicated Steam Labs page where you can see all current experiences.
