It is not at all out of the question for the Pittsburgh Steelers to select a quarterback at the start of the 2021 NFL Draft. Despite reports that Ben Roethlisberger will be returning to the team this season, the front office acknowledges that ‘there must be a plan for his successor.
But former NFL general manager and current NFL network analyst Charlie Casserly is only pushing Steeler Nation’s hopes too far with his new one-ride simulation project.
Casserly has four quarterbacks coming off the board in the first round, which is pretty common among NFL draft pundits. He also has the Steelers selecting that fourth quarterback with the No.24 pick overall. The spoiler here is Casserly has former Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields falling to that pick.
Even though the Steelers and Ben Roethlisberger plan to continue their partnership, I don’t see the veteran playing any longer. In an astonishing turn of events, Fields slips all the way down to No.24 (obviously, it won’t be a surprise if he gets there much sooner) and Pittsburgh leaps at the chance to land a talented successor for Big Ben. Sitting behind a future Hall of Famer for a year is a prime spot for the Ohio State prospect.
This kind of scenario is wishful thinking. I won’t rule out Fields being the third or even fourth quarterback on the board given the difference between the two prospects. There are certainly teams where Fields is not the best system. That said, if Fields isn’t in the Top 10, there will be plenty of teams looking to make it and Pittsburgh could be one of them.
