Steelers linebacker Bud Dupree is out for the season. And now?

The Steelers’ worst fears were confirmed Thursday morning. Other tests carried out revealed a torn ACL for Steelers linebacker Bud Dupree.

It was overwhelming for the fourth-year linebacker who was enjoying a stellar season with eight sacks in 11 games. Not only because he was an integral part of a team with Super Bowl aspirations, but it’s almost confirmed to be his final season with Pittsburgh.

There’s no time to dwell on Dupree, however. The show must continue. How are they going to do it?

Alex highsmith

The Steelers scored Bud Dupree in March knowing full well they couldn’t afford to keep him beyond 2020. Depth as an outside linebacker became an immediate need for Pittsburgh.

Enter Alex Highsmith, via the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Spelling Dupree, Highsmith has 361 shots (63 points, 59 pash rush, 19 covers) and contributed a sack, 14 tackles (3 for loss) and a quarterback.

In Week 8 against the Baltimore Ravens, Highsmith had a huge interception early in the third quarter. The pick led to a touchdown from Eric Ebron, which took the Steelers three points behind the Ravens, 14-17.

Jayrone Elliott

During training camp in August, the Steelers signed Elliott, who was with the team in 2019. In five games and 22 defensive shots, Elliott registered two tackles. His use was primarily on special teams, however, where he has appeared in three games this season.

Vince Williams / Mike Hilton

As Curt Popejoy of Steelers Wire pointed out earlier, it will take a village to replace Dupree’s production. Expect inside linebacker Vince Williams and cornerback Mike Hilton to take over when needed – which they probably will often be.

Beyond that, Christian Kuntz was recently recruited into the training squad. He has collegial experience as an outside linebacker. At Duquesne University, Kuntz recorded 248 tackles (71.5 for loss) and an academic record of 30.5 sacks.

The Steelers will try free agents outside of linebackers in the coming days to add depth to their roster, but that’s where it is now.
