Coach Mike Tomlin held his end-of-season press conference on Wednesday and was asked if there would be any changes to his coaching staff this offseason.
“Change is part of our business,” Tomlin said at his press conference. “I recognize the possibility for that. We’re just starting the process of having these types of fleshy discussions that usually produce change or no change. It’s that time of year. I anticipate those discussions will take place. and will happen sooner than we chart a course to move forward. ”
The Steelers wasted no time making decisions.
On Thursday morning, the team announced that offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner, offensive line coach Shaun Sarrett and defensive back coach Tom Bradley would not have their contracts renewed.
“I want to thank all three coaches for their commitment and dedication to the Pittsburgh Steelers,” Tomlin said in a statement Thursday. “They have all played a vital role in our success and I appreciate their efforts. Personally, Randy and I have been in Pittsburgh since I hired him in 2007, but our relationship started long before that. He is one of me. friends for years and I wish his family all the best and I am eternally grateful for our relationships on and off the pitch. ”
Fichtner, who was hired in 2007, has spent the last three seasons as the Steelers’ offensive coordinator. In two of those seasons (2018-19), he served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, while simply taking on the offensive coordinator role in 2020. Previously, he was the quarterbacks coach of the 2010-17 team and the 2007-09 receivers coach.
Sarrett joined the Steelers in 2012 and was an offensive assistant for six seasons, from 2012 to 2017. In 2018, he was promoted to assistant coach of the offensive line. Sarrett was named the team’s offensive line coach in 2019, a role he has held for the past two seasons.
Bradley joined the Steelers in 2018 as the team’s defensive back coach, a role he held for three seasons. Bradley joined the team after a career as a college football coach, most notably at Penn State University.
