Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is on the reserve / COVID-19 roster due to close contact with tight end Vance McDonald ahead of McDonald’s test positive, so he will not be training with the team ahead of Sunday’s game against the Bengals.
Roethlisberger can receive treatment for his knees, but otherwise must be separated from the team for five days. Offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner said Thursday the quarterback was still part of Cincinnati’s preparation from a distance.
“It’s been great because it’s obviously accessible,” Fichtner said, via Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com. “He has a lot of free time. It is we who must take the time to adapt. … Ben likes to text, so we get texts at night and go back and forth on a lot of things. . . . It’s like he’s in the room.
Roethlisberger will be cleared to play on time on Sunday as long as he continues to test negative and Fichtner has said the team are preparing as if they will. Mason Rudolph and Josh Dobbs keep quarterbacks reps with Roethlisberger away from practice, but Fichtner wouldn’t say which one would play if plans changed.
