It feels like any time a quarterback could become available, it makes Pittsburgh Steelers fans bubble up on the potential of finding the replacement for Ben Roethlisberger. The last name is Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford.
The Lions and the 31-year-old quarterback have agreed to separate and Detroit will be looking for a trade in the offseason that sends Stafford to a new team in 2021. But sadly for many Steelers fans, that team won’t be Pittsburgh.
The Steelers are heading into the offseason with more than $ 34 million above the salary cap with more than a dozen inside free agents to deal with. There is no money to recruit top players while Roethlisberger is on the roster. But even if Big Ben chooses to retire or be released, that doesn’t suddenly cure the Steelers’ salary cap issues.
Pittsburgh signed a futures contract with Dwayne Haskins and still has Mason Rudolph on the list. Look for them to sort the future between those two this season and if neither comes out, they’ll set a new plan in motion.
