One of the students at the Colorado Charter School, who suspects he has shot suspects, "always joked" about the slaughter of his classmates, said a former student.

Devon Erickson, 18, "will murmur, get closer and put an arm around you, and whisper in your ear:" Do not come to school tomorrow, "explained the former student, Kevin Cole, in an interview with "Today."

"We were not surprised to know who it was because you could see him coming from a kilometer, but the fact that he did it …" said Cole. "Because all the time I've spent at STEM, he's always joked about it."

Officials from the STEM School Highlands Ranch were reportedly warned five months before this week's lethal attack on a "perfect storm" on campus for a "Columbine rehearsal".

Parents complained of intimidation, sexual assault and violence.

"Although STEM takes the charges seriously, our investigation did not reveal any evidence to support the allegations raised in the anonymous complaint," said School Executive Director, Penelope Eucker, in a statement this week.

Erickson, an elder, allegedly opened fire on his classmates with a pistol – with another student, Alec McKinney, a woman but identified as a man – just three days before their graduation date. One student, Kendrick Castillo, was killed and eight others injured.

"Kendrick was without a doubt one of the people who should have survived," Cole said. "On everyone there, he was really the best of us."

Erickson and McKinney are scheduled to appear in court next week after being postponed to Friday afternoon's hearing. Their appearance is scheduled for Wednesday.
