The Monster Pho restaurant in Emeryville is just 40 minutes from Oracle Arena – the former home of the now San Francisco-based Golden State Warriors.
Led by Tee Tran, whose mother still makes the restaurant’s spring rolls by hand, the California-based company is struggling under socio-economic pressure from the coronavirus pandemic, as is the restaurant industry across the country. .

Almost 17% of all American restaurants – more than 110,000 businesses – have closed long-term or permanently, according to a study by the National Restaurant Association.
But as 75% of Tran’s business evaporated and her family were forced to put her house on mortgage loan, Monster Pho was still working in partnership with Stephen and Ayesha Curry’s Eat. Learn. To play. Foundation, as well as the World Central Kitchen founded by chef José Andrés, to distribute around 24,000 meals to those in need.
With food insecurity growing in the country and food banks running on steam, Tran said he was inspired to help in large part because of the values instilled in him by his mother.
“As an immigrant, we came here with nothing. So our family understood exactly what it’s like not to have a meal,” Tran told The Tamron Hall Show.
“Literally, I juggle every day. I know it’s hard for me, but it’s hard for everyone. But, keep pushing. I don’t like people feeling sorry for me. let’s not do that., “he added. “You just have to work hard and you have to help people.”
In recognition of Tran and Monster Pho’s efforts, the Curry family presented Tran with a check for $ 25,000.
“This is what the spirit of the community we want to support is,” star leader told host Tamron Hall. “And, he embodies that, obviously, through this pandemic.”
