Grand Basketball Champion Steph Curry is committed Monday to fund a new golf program at Howard University, with a six-year donation to give the HBCU the time to create a division I sports program .
Although Curry is well known for his prowess on the basketball court, he is also a passionate golfer who has been playing since childhood and played competitively at Davidson University, notes CBS Sports.
"Golf is a sport that has changed my life in a less tangible but equally powerful way," Curry said in a press release. "I feel really honored to play a small role in the rich history of Howard University."
Curry's gift, described only as being in the "seven-digit" range, is one of the most important gifts given to Howard in his 152-year history, according to the Washington Post.
"We never did that in athletics," Wayne, president of Howard, Howard. Frederic said Monday. "It is important."
And all this is due to a meeting between Curry and a student of Howard earlier this year during the screening of the documentary produced by Curry. Emanuel on the massacre of nine parishioners in 2015 in Charleston, Methodist African Methodist Episcopal Church Mother Emanuel (S.C.).

After the screening, Otis Ferguson, a student, told Curry to participate in a round of golf. Although this did not happen, the two men discussed their shared love for the sport, and when Ferguson said Howard did not have a golf program, an idea was born.
"Hearing someone as passionate as I am about sport while pursuing his studies at Howard … touched me," Curry told the post.
Howard, who no longer offers golf since the 1970s, said the Post, plans to launch a golf program for men and women in time for the 2020-2021 school year.
