Steph Curry on Thompson’s injury: ‘it’s tragic for such a talented and hungry guy as Klay’

Warriors guard Stephen Curry, in his first extended public comments on teammate Klay Thompson since Thompson’s torn season-ending Achilles tendon, called the injury “tragic” following his lengthy rehab from the torn ACL last year.

Curry, in a Monday phone interview with The Chronicle, paused and struggled a bit to chain his response when asked about Thompson’s injury.

“Yeah, there’s not much to say,” Curry said. “It’s just tragic for such a talented and hungry guy like Klay to come back from his ACL (injury), and it all took, and now he has to wait another year. There are no real words to put this into context. “

Curry had posted a brief post on his Instagram Story last week, simply encouraging ‘my brother’ @KlayThompson to ‘stay strong’.

Thompson sustained an injury to his right Achilles during a pickup game Wednesday in Los Angeles, just hours before the NBA Draft. An MRI scan the next day revealed the extent of his injury, which will sideline him for the entire 2020-2021 season.

Thompson missed last season after suffering a torn left ACL in Game 6 of the NBA Finals against Toronto in June 2019. Prior to this Achilles injury, he had participated in the Warriors offseason minicamp with little restriction and seemed on track for the game. start of training camp next week.

The NBA will begin its season on December 22.

“We’re going to get the basketball part,” Curry said. “It’s more about getting him the support he needs to get into rehab. Hope everyone sends thoughts and prayers. It’s gonna be a long way. It’s a little difficult. There is not much to say.
