- Stephanie Grisham says she needed to be “deprogrammed” after Trump’s White House chaos.
- “I know that for me a toxic environment was normal,” she said of her time at high levels in the White House.
- Grisham told Insider that “normal things” like crickets singing at night made her anxious.
Former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham struggled with anxiety and had to be “deprogrammed” after leaving the White House, she told Insider in an interview on Friday.
Grisham, who publishes a revealing memoir of his time in the White House, moved halfway across the United States to a small rural town in Kansas near the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. She spent most of her final months in the White House working as communications director for former First Lady Melania Trump and traveling to Washington, DC before officially resigning following the January 6 insurgency.
“I don’t want to speak for my colleagues, but I know that for me a toxic environment was normal,” she said. “I tried to explain to people that when I left and went to Kansas, normal things weren’t normal for me. Like calm nights with cricket locusts and stars, it got me. gave me anxiety. And just having dinner with the family and watching TV, normal things made me anxious because I had been so used to chaos. ”
In the memoir, “I’ll answer your questions now,” Grisham characterizes a dysfunctional White House environment and reveals unflattering new anecdotes about former President Donald Trump and notoriously private Melania Trump.
Grisham said she thought she would have quit even if the Trumps hadn’t turned on her or even if the Capitol Riots never happened, telling Insider: “Whatever the scenario, I think. that I would have come to a lot of conclusions that I touched on much later. ”
“It’s hard to describe,” Grisham said of his departure from Trumpworld. “You know a lot of people say, ‘Too little, too late’, which I fully understand and think it’s fair, but it’s also so nuanced in how you really have to step back and get deprogrammed. , and realize what’s important, I think, to really see how bad it is. ”
Grisham told Insider she was “gone for a while” and had not spoken out against Trump’s false allegations of election fraud because she “just needed time to be again, unscheduled, calm and silent, and just understand, you know, where I’ve stood on a lot of things. “
Grisham came downstairs as a junior press secretary on the Trump campaign and, through her stubborn loyalty to the Trumps and willingness to turn a blind eye to many red flags, she says, climbed the ranks to become one of Melania’s few closest confidants and to occupy the coveted post of press secretary.
Trump and Melania have both spoken out against Grisham in public statements and denounced her as a disgruntled ex-employee seeking to capitalize on her White House experience.
“The author is desperately trying to rehabilitate her tarnished reputation by manipulating and distorting the truth about Ms. Trump,” Melania’s office said. said in a statement on Monday. “Mrs. Grisham is a deceptive and troubled person who does not deserve anyone’s trust.”
Grisham told Insider that she was completely honest in what she wrote about Melania and that she had texts and other evidence to back it up.
“I expected it,” she said of the former first lady’s response. “Was I paid to write a book? Yes, but also, I’m not sure you can put a price on maybe some of the things I’ve been through since.”
