While some of MMA’s most important and monumental moments have come from the hands, feet, courage, heart and determination of women, Stephen A. Smith admits that this is not his cup of tea.
The longtime ESPN broadcaster hasn’t exactly been in the good graces of mixed martial arts enthusiasts over the years, especially when it comes to being ‘disgusted’ with Donald Cerrone’s performance at the ‘UFC 246 against Conor McGregor in January 2020 where he finished in just 40 seconds.
Earlier this week, Smith spoke with Larry Wilmore about the Black on the air podcast and was asked about the changing of the guard in executive offices, courts and sports grounds, seeing more women being hired into these positions.
San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Becky Hammon has been promoted to head coach after Greg Popovich was sent off from the Dec. 31 game against the Los Angeles Lakers. When asked if we should expect to see more of it, Smith took a slightly different turn with the subject.
“First of all, I love it. I think there are a huge number of women who are incredibly qualified to do the job they do, ”Smith said. “Where I jump off the bandwagon is where they try to physically engage. For example, I never want to see a woman box a man. I do not want to see that. I don’t want to see a woman in the UFC fighting a man, even though there are women who are going to kick the guy’s ass.
“When I think of pugilist sports, I don’t like to see women involved in it at all. I do not like it. I wouldn’t pass, I wouldn’t promote legislative laws to prohibit them from doing so, but I don’t want to see women punch themselves in the face. I don’t want to see women fighting in the octagon and stuff like that. It is only me.
“I certainly am, what I would be categorically against these fighting men. I don’t think it’s cool. I am not in favor of this. Also, you never want to give men a license to believe it’s okay to be physical with a woman, to be completely honest with you. You don’t want to do this.
While 2020 brought some incredible fights to fans and viewers around the world, there was nothing better than the UFC 248 strawweight title fight between Zhang Weili and Joanna Jedrzejczyk, who won the MMA Fighting Fight of the Year award. Weili won a very close decision in a battle for the ages.
