Stephen Curry passes Reggie Miller for 2nd on 3-point list

Stephen Curry now owns second place on the NBA’s all-time 3-point list, and it should only be a matter of time until he hits the first.

The Golden State Warriors star passed Reggie Miller on Saturday with the 2561st 3-point of his career, scored early in the third quarter against Utah Jazz. Curry ultimately finished with 2,562 career 3-point marks, going from 5 for 10 in depth with 24 points, 7 assists and 7 rebounds in a 127-108 loss.

Only Ray Allen leads Curry on the list, with a record of 2,973.

At Curry’s current rate of around 4.1 3 points per game since the 2012-13 season, it would only take 101 games to pass the Hall of Famer. If you use his rate of 4.6 per game since 2015-16, that number drops to 90. Either way, Curry is on course to break the record next season barring injury or inexplicable loss of form.

Reggie Miller congratulates Curry on several occasions

Miller might have been a notorious trash-talker, but he was only graceful when Curry walked past him. There was the gracious tweet:

Then the graceful video cry:

Then the graceful cameo on Curry’s post-game Zoom call.

Which guy.

Record or not, Curry is already shooting GOAT

Allen may be ahead of Curry (at the moment), but it’s hard to say Curry hasn’t surpassed him as the MVP in NBA history.

Allen made his 2,973 3 points during an 18-year career. Curry is on track to overtake him in Grade 13, despite losing several important seasons to injury. Allen has played 1,300 games, Curry just finished his 715th.

Allen shot 40.0% from depth for his career, while Miller shot 39.5%. Curry has shot 43.3% of his career. In fact, you have to go all the way down to Hubert Davis at 205th on the 3-point all-time roster to find a player who has made 3 points at a faster pace than Curry (other players with higher careers 3 points rate that Curry: his brother Seth Curry and his trainer Steve Kerr).

Curry already owns the all-time single-season record for 3 points, with 402 in his year as a unanimous MVP in 2015-16. Four more places in the all-time top 10 belong to him.

No player in NBA history comes close to combining precision and volume on the 3-point line like Curry. He does it perhaps during the happiest times in 3-point basketball history, but it was Curry himself who helped bring the NBA into that era, and it should be Curry. who retires with the clear title of the greatest shooter in the NBA.
