Although Stephen Hauschka pitched in a game earlier this year, he decided 13 seasons in the NFL were enough. The veteran kicker announced his retirement on Friday (via Instagram).
Best known for his Seattle run, Hauschka pitched five teams – the Ravens, Broncos, Seahawks, Bills and Jaguars – and first landed in the NFL as a UDFA Vikings in 2008. Now aged 35 Hauschka will quit after 166 games.
The Hauschka Seahawks six-season stint saw him pitch two Super Bowls, the first of which earned him a ring, and 11 playoff games. However, his playoff career started in three Ravens playoff games in 2008. Hauschka was not Baltimore’s placekicker in those games, however.
He delivered a perfect 8-for-8 on field goals in Seattle’s Super Bowl XLVIII run – including two 40-plus yards in the Seahawks’ 23-17 win over the 49ers in the game for the NFC title – and also made a basket on the field. in Super Bowl XLIX. He missed just one basket in a playoff game, ending his playoff career 24-on-25 in January and February. Hauschka went 4-for-4 in last season’s Bills-Texans wild card game. In the regular season, he ended his career with an 85.2% success rate – 16th all-time – with a long 58 (in 2014).
After two seasons with 90% more accuracy on field goals in Seattle, Hauschka signed two Bills contracts – the second of which via the 2019 expansion – and kicked off with Buffalo for three seasons. The Bills released the veteran earlier this year, opting for the rookie Tyler bass. The Jaguars have cut Hauschka after one game this season.
