Stephen King’s New Short Story is a Humble Bundle Exclusive

Author Stephen King and Humble Bundle are teaming up to release an exclusive short story titled “Red Screen.” All “pay what you want” (from $ 5 minimum) income from “Red Screen” will benefit the American Civil Liberties Union while the story is available, September 10-16.

As well as being one of the latest entries in King’s prolific body of work, “Red Screen” is also the first Humble Bundle exclusive. Based on how little plot sharing, it certainly sounds… interesting. The description follows (emphasis mine): “The never-before-published story follows a cop questioning a disturbed plumber who has just murdered his wife, only to discover something much more insidious.

I’m guessing King isn’t referring to Mario (of the Mario brothers) here – although his work was inspired to inspire the games – so it could involve murder adjacent to the plumbing. In a way both more and less scary.

When it comes to digital platforms, King is a bit used to tinkering with different exit strategies. The new Ur was exclusive to Amazon’s second-generation Kindle at launch. King’s relationship with Amazon will eventually deteriorate due to the company’s aggressive tactics with publisher Hachette. King has also chosen to skip e-book releases altogether in the past. At least with this Humble Bundle experiment, throwing literary spaghetti on the wall is good for a good cause.
