Steve Jobs holding iPhone 4
CNET‘s Roger Cheng today recounted his recollection of Jobs’ visit The Wall Street Journalat the New York headquarters to offer him and a small group of other journalists a glimpse of a prototype iPhone, shortly after the device was unveiled in 2007.

Cheng revealed that when a reporter asked about the durability of the iPhone, Jobs responded by throwing the prototype he was holding up in the air towards the center of the room, resulting in a small gasp followed. silence immediately when the appliance hits the carpet. Cheng said the iPhone survived unscathed, adding that the move was the kind of calculated risk Jobs was known to take as a showman.

“The memory underscores the kind of effort Jobs made to make a good impression,” Cheng wrote. “Imagine how disastrous it would have been if this iPhone had broken down or died out in front of so many reporters.”

Jobs presented the original iPhone as if it were three separate products: a widescreen iPod with touch controls, a revolutionary mobile phone and a revolutionary Internet communication device. The crowd at Macworld San Francisco erupted in cheerful applause as they realized Jobs was referring to just one device.

Jobs died on October 5, 2011 at the age of 56. Apple maintains a Remembering Steve page on its website with posts from people around the world.
