Iowa Republican Rep. Steve King refused Friday to apologize for hiding controversial claims to ban abortions, even in cases of rape and incest.
King acknowledged that he could have commented "in a slightly gentler way," but added that some genealogists had asked him to confirm his comments.
"I would point out that genealogists have contacted me and told me that it was 100% accurate.I would present this in a slightly gentler way, though. A softer way, here is this: most of us have seen the movie It's a beautiful life"King said in reference to the 1946 film and how the character of George Bailey saw life in his community as if he was never born." "Every life is precious, regardless of the circumstances or the way in which they appeared," said King at a press conference.
King said that Republican politicians who approved abortion exceptions for rape and incest victims could not be considered "pro-life philosophically" and instead used abortion as stratagem to win the favor of the party.
The Republican representative from Iowa also quoted a verse from the Bible in his defense, saying that "the son must not bear the crimes of the father, nor the father shall bear the crimes of the son".
King has been criticized by both parties in recent weeks after being asked if there would be "no population of the world" if rape and incest had not occurred. He made such inflammatory comments at the Westside Conservative Club of Des Moines while he was defending a pro-life law banning abortion in all cases, including the ban on the procedure for victims of rape and incest.
"And if we looked at all the family trees and removed those people who were products of rape and incest, would there be a world population if we did that?" Said the king. "Given all the wars and all the rapes and looting that took place and what happened to culture after society, I know I can not certify that I'm not part of that."
King was condemned by both Republicans and Democrats, and many anti-abortion activists said his comments were not shared by the majority of abortion opponents.
Many advocates of life who championed the Iowa Republicans' views on abortion joined King at Friday's press conference, including Save the 1 president Rebecca Kiessling. Iowa Right to Life Executive Director, Caitlyn Dixson, Executive Director of Iowans for Life, Maggie DeWitte, Executive Director of Personhood Iowa.
