The 1968 Ford Mustang GT featured in Steve McQueen's "Bullitt" thriller will be sold, Mecum auctioneers said on Wednesday. The auction will take place in Kissimmee, Florida in January.
McQueen (and his double stuntman) walked the streets of San Francisco in the green Mustang to create the most iconic segment of the 1968 film. This 10-minute scene became the gold standard for car chases in the screen and turned the car into a cultural icon.
For decades after the film's release, however, the "Bullitt" Mustang has disappeared. It was only in January 2018 that the car was rediscovered when Tennessee's representative, Sean Kiernan, revealed that she had remained in the family garage in the decades since her father it had taken for $ 6,000.
(Another version of the car, the "double stuntman" used for some of the action shots, was also lost for years but resurfaced in Mexico in 2017.)
The car has been touring the world since its reappearance at the Detroit Auto Show on the occasion of the film's 50th anniversary.
In an Instagram post on Wednesday night, Kiernan announced his family's decision to finally auction Bullitt, even after he refused to sell it to McQueen himself. Two times.
"I can promise you that we thought about this issue together and decided that it was the best decision for the family," Kiernan wrote. "Bullitt has been part of my family for 45 years and we celebrated it in the greatest way possible and it's a new role and new meaning for the future owner."
