New Orleans Pelicans Acquire Steven Adams From Oklahoma City Thunder, Says Athlete’s Shams Charania. The Pelicans lost outgoing starting center Derrick Favors to Utah Jazz in free agency earlier Friday, and have since found a replacement. As part of the deal, Adams will receive a two-year, $ 35 million extension, according to ESPN’s Zach Lowe.

The deal will technically be part of the Jrue Holiday blockbuster, as well as a planned nighttime exchange between the Pelicans and the Nuggets. The Nuggets sent a future protected first-round pick to the Pelicans in exchange for RJ Hampton’s draft rights, which they took with a Milwaukee native. This future first round, a pair of second rounds, George Hill and Darius Miller will travel to the Thunder, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Adams will presumably start for the Pelicans ahead of 2019 lottery pick Jaxson Hayes, who is still only 20 years old and believed enough. The Adams-signed expansion will give Hayes time to grow into the starting role the organization envisioned for him as the No.8 pick in 2019. He can now develop at his own pace.

The Thunder, meanwhile, accepted Al Horford’s contract earlier in the week. He played before he could in Philadelphia last season, but that experience turned out to be a failure. The Thunder clearly intend to play him down center, which made Adams consumable. The fact that they raised additional interim capital for an expiring contract that they hadn’t planned to keep is the icing on the cake. The Thunder continues to store choices at an unprecedented rate.

Adams has spent his entire career with the Thunder. He was the last remaining part of the James Harden trade still on Oklahoma City’s list. Now that it’s gone, the Thunder can really kick off this new era. It will still be a while before we see the finished product, but the rebuilding is in full swing in Oklahoma City.
