Still no fix for missing PS4 to PS5 upgrades from Ubisoft games

Assassin's Creed Valhalla PS5 PS4

Update (November 28, 2020): It’s been over a week since this issue surfaced, and the Ubisoft forums are still filled with disgruntled fans unable to access the promised free PlayStation 5 upgrades for PlayStation 4 games, while using physical media in European territories. A quick glance at the forum shows that many people have the same problem, with Sony or Ubisoft yet to come up with a consistent solution. We’ll check with the French publisher and see if he has an update to share.

Update (November 23, 2020): Ubisoft told Eurogamer.net that it is investigating issues with PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5 upgrades of its launch titles, which appear to affect European owners of physical Blu-ray discs. The French publisher has suggested a workaround, with which you may have mixed success. Basically, you have to insert the PS4 disc, select View Product, and then go to upgrade from there. This may work for you, although we’ve read that some people don’t see the View Product option at all. Your mileage may vary.

Original story (November 22, 2020): If you have a PlayStation 4 copy of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla or Watch Dogs Legion that you are hoping to upgrade to PlayStation 5, you might be out of luck as none of the titles perform as expected at this time. This problem seems to only apply to Blu-ray owners in certain European countries, but it’s no less frustrating.

So, as you may already know, both titles offer free upgrades from PS4 to PS5. While we can verify that purchases from the PS Store are working as expected, Blu-ray owners are experiencing issues. What is supposed to happen is that you insert the PS4 disc and then download the next gen version. Instead, fans are charged £ 59.99.

Obviously this is a mistake and Ubisoft has said it is investigating. There is a workaround that is to create a Turkish PlayStation Network account, but we don’t recommend going to such lengths for an issue which will likely be fixed in the next few days. It’s a disappointing confusion, however, there is no doubt about it – I hope this will all be resolved soon.
