Stipe Miocic, Daniel Cormier and Sean O’Malley lead medical suspensions after UFC 252

A five-round battle between Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier settled their three-year rivalry, but neither heavyweight left UFC 252 unscathed.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission revealed the card’s medical suspensions on Monday after Miocic defeated Cormier by unanimous decision to close the trilogy.

After suffering a brutal glance during the fight, Cormier later said he was unable to see for much of the final two rounds. He has reportedly suffered from a torn cornea as a result and, although Cormier has all but confirmed his retirement from the sport, he will face a potentially long suspension if he decides to compete again.

Cormier must have his left eye cleaned by an ophthalmologist or he will be suspended for six months until February 12, 2021.

Miocic should also be examined by an ophthalmologist after undergoing a glance earlier in the fight. Following their rematch in 2019, Miocic had to undergo surgery to repair a torn retina due to blows to the eyes before his fourth round TKO victory over Cormier.

Miocic must now see a retinal specialist to get clearance for his left eye before being allowed to participate again.

Meanwhile, Sean O’Malley also faces a potentially long suspension after sustaining a leg injury during his fight with Marlon “Chito” Vera. Barely two minutes into the fight, O’Malley started to favor his right leg and replays appeared to show Vera connecting with a kick that could have done some damage.

Either way, O’Malley was visibly limping on the leg until he finally fell to the ground where Vera finished him off with strikes before the end of the first round.

Now, the rising bantamweight star will need to get clearance from an orthopedic doctor on her right ankle or she will be suspended for six months until February 12, 2021.
