Stocks end volatile month with modest daily gain

US stocks gave up most of their early morning advances to end a month of volatility, but they have remained on track to record their strongest weekly gain since June.

Shares, including technology, consumer discretionary and communications stocks, dropped gains earlier in the session and ended the day flat. This reversal follows comments by President Trump, who said on Twitter that the US did not have "a tariff problem … we have a problem with the Fed," as well as signs that Americans are more and more pessimistic.
