NEW YORK – The Mets' inability to tie victories generates regular frustrations. Some days, the emotion has fallen on the manager, Mickey Callaway, who has absorbed an inordinate amount of heat into the New York media landscape. On other days, he fell into the hands of players, many of whom receive night boos at Citi Field.

On Friday, the frustration of the Mets broke out in the form of a skirmish that swept the benches. The canoes and yards dumped after Drew Gagnon hit Ian Desmond from a throw at a three-run tradeoff in the Rockies in the eighth inning of the Mets' 5-1 defeat.

When he entered the eighth inning, Gagnon allowed a single start, a stolen base, and then two homers to make a match four. The next hitter was Desmond, who took a ball and a shot before Gagnon hit him on the back with a fastball at 92 mph. Desmond took several steps towards the hillock when Gagnon threw his hands in the air and barked at him, pushing the two benches and the bulls to disengage.

The referees quickly restored order, but another minor skirmish allowed the benches and counters to assemble before the end of the incident. Gagnon faced another batter, letting one goal pass before Callaway pulled him out of the game.

Mets starter Jacob deGrom has been effective but inefficient. It took 112 shots to finish six innings, eliminate 10 Rockies and keep them at two points. The only race of the Mets is on a circuit of Michael Conforto in sixth row.
