Strange Utah monolith taken by group that said ‘Leave no trace’

New details have emerged suggesting that the bizarre steel monolith that went missing shortly after its discovery in Utah was taken by a group of self-proclaimed environmentalists.

The 12-foot-tall object, which appeared near Salt Lake City, was allegedly broken and removed by four men on Friday, according to Colorado photographer Ross Bernards.

The 34-year-old, who posted photos and details on Facebook, recalled that the group had put what was left of the monolith in a wheelbarrow, saying: ‘Leave no trace’ and ‘That’s why you don’t. leave no garbage in the desert. “

The monolith was reportedly placed on public land in Red Rock Country without permission, although the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office told The Associated Press on Wednesday that it did not plan to investigate.

His disappearance, however, is another matter. “Theft – that’s what we’re looking for,” San Juan County Sheriff Jason Torgerson said in an interview with KSL.com Tuesday. “But no one came forward to say that a monolith was missing.”

On Tuesday, YouTuber and slackliner Sylvan Christensen and BASE rider Andy Lewis took credit for removing the monolith, posting a short video clip in which men wear part of it.

In a statement, Christensen said they were motivated to take the monolith because of the “damage caused by Internet sensationalism.”

“We removed the Utah monolith because there is clear precedent for how we share and normalize the use of our public lands, natural wildlife, native plants, freshwater sources and human impacts on them, ”he said. “The mystery was the craze and we want to use this time to unite the people behind the real issues here – we are losing our public lands – things like this don’t help.”

The Bureau of Land Management has reported cars parked over vegetation and an increase in litter since the monolith was discovered on November 18.

The agency was conducting aerial surveillance of bighorn sheep when the object was found. Authorities have since determined that the structure was placed on the ground between August 2015 and October 2016.

Utah isn’t the only place we have appeared. A similar structure found in northern Romania last week and a phallic-shaped sculpture from Germany recently went missing without explanation.
