Streaming platforms and cable networks increased their share of viewer time in June, while broadcast networks decreased. Netflix remains the top streamer, accounting for 7% of all TV shows for the month.

These are the findings of Nielsen’s second monthly publication of “The Gauge,” which tracks total TV usage across all platforms. In June, cable captured the largest share of viewers’ attention, accounting for 40% of total TV usage throughout the day, while streaming captured a 27% usage share. .

Both are up 1 percentage point from Gauge’s initial rankings in May. Cable and streaming each took a point on broadcast networks, which grew from 25% to 23% of total TV usage. This is not a huge surprise considering that the end of May marked the end of the traditional broadcast season, while cable was likely boosted by high profile sporting events like the NBA and NHL playoffs. Usage of other TVs, including games, VOD, and streaming from cable boxes and playing physical media, was stable at 9% of total usage.

Netflix held the largest share of all streaming platforms with 7% of total TV usage, one point ahead of YouTube (6%, including its YouTube TV service). Hulu (3%) and Amazon Prime Video (2%) were both equal, while Disney + ticked up to 2%. All other streaming platforms combined account for 8% of total TV usage.

Among the individual titles for the week of June 14-20, the NBC drama Manifesto was the most efficient. It has had a massive week with nearly 2.5 billion minutes of viewing in its first two seasons, among the highest tally for a title gained since Nielsen started tracking weekly views 10 months ago. The peak viewing – it more than doubled the previous week’s tally – came the same week NBC canceled the show after three seasons.

Loki reached # 1 among streaming original series in its second week on Disney +. The Marvel series has jumped to 886 million minutes of listening time, a gain of 21% from its first. by Pixar Luca also debuted on Disney +, leading the movie chart and finishing second overall with 1.57 billion minutes of viewing time. The Handmaid’s Tale also improved during the week of its fourth season finale, increasing by about 20 percent to 505 million minutes.

Nielsen’s streaming ratings cover viewing on TVs only and do not include minutes watched on computers or mobile devices. Ratings only measure US audiences, not other countries, and currently only include Amazon, Disney +, Hulu, and Netflix.
