An illegal knee cost Petr Yan his UFC bantamweight title last night (Saturday, March 6, 2021) at UFC 259 live on ESPN + PPV from UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada, as the Russian champion landed a strike on Aljamain Sterling in the fourth round which ended the fight.
Sterling was in control early on with constant pressure, leg kicks, flying knees and hooks. Yan waited patiently until he unloaded a huge right hand which knocked over “Funk Master”. Sterling picked up momentum early in the second before having Yan jam his takedown attempts along the cage.
Yan really started to gain control in the third as “Funk Master” started to show signs of serious fatigue. The champion was able to push Sterling to the ground and blocked everything Sterling was returning. Sterling continued to tire in the fourth as Yan started hitting him with precise shots. Unfortunately, Yan ended up landing an illegal knee while Sterling had one knee on the ground. The ref had warned Yan before Sterling’s position strike, but the champion threw it anyway.
In a strange turn of events, Sterling ends up winning the UFC bantamweight title through a disqualification of Yan.
