Study reveals wide therapeutic impact of THC

A new study by researchers at the University of New Mexico showed that THC could be just as valuable medically as the CBD – and perhaps even more, reports EurekAlert.

Public perception of the medicinal properties of cannabis has largely been transferred to the plant's second main cannabinoid, CBD. However, the results of the study show a much stronger correlation of therapeutic relief with THC compared to CBD.

The research examines user reports submitted by patients with the Releaf application, the largest database on the effects of cannabis in the United States. The analysis focused on data from 20,000 user sessions and 27 categories of symptoms, including symptoms such as depression and seizures.

"Despite popular belief, both in the popular press and in much of the scientific community, that only CBD has medical benefits, while THC is only the best, our results suggest that THC could be more important than CBD to generate therapeutic benefits. In our study, CBD appears to have little effect, while THC generates measurable improvements in symptom relief. These results justify the immediate removal of the schedule of all types of cannabis, in addition to hemp, so that cannabis containing THC is more widely available to the general public, for pharmaceutical purposes. – Jacob Miguel Vigil, co-author of the study, via EurekAlert

The study "The association between the characteristics of the cannabis product and the relief of symptoms" is published in the journal Scientific Reports.
