Sub Rosa is out (again?), In Steam Early Access this time

I first played Sub Rosa about nine years ago, but it’s only now Steam Early Access. Publisher Devolver Digital marked the occasion with a new cinematic trailer that showcases the offerings and double butt of the multiplayer first-person shooter.

Sub Rosa has been available for purchase elsewhere for a long time, and SteamDB suggests that it has been available on Steam since 2014. The game’s Steam page explains that it “has been in Early Access for years now, albeit hidden from the store and relying on word of mouth to create a small but motivated community of fans around the world. ”This method of posting was referred to in 2017 as“ first access ”by some of these“ word of mouth ”, aka a marketing tweet from its editor Devolver.

Either way, it’s nice to see the game open up to a wider audience. Sub Rosa is a great idea: basically, a multiplayer shooter designed to dynamically produce Mexican clashes between players. You have to trade data discs with other teams to earn money, but you can get After money if you double-cross them and try to walk away from an agreed upon deal with the money and the record. The result is a lot of backstage bloodshed, parking lot shootouts, ambushes gone awry, and hostage-taking, all in a large open world that’s also filled with NPCs (v. Simple) and ruled by stupid physics.

Honestly, I never had fun trying to play with buddies a lifetime ago, but I guess it’s come a long way since then. I almost hope Sub Rosa is a success anyway, as it’s an interesting game and a Dwarf Fortress-like act of dedication that’s still in development all these years later.
