An investigator said that a 17-year-old student had committed suicide in a high school in the Orlando area after being excused from his Wednesday morning course. The student was shot with a handgun just before 8 am at Lake Mary High School, said Sheriff Dennis Lemma of Seminole County at a press conference.
Lemma stated that the grade 11 student was in class around 7:50 am, just before the end of the first period, and asked his teacher to go to the bathroom. She went to an isolated area of the school's auditorium and a shot was heard in the building about five to ten minutes later, Lemma said.

Two school officials and a nurse reacted in one minute and tried to revive the girl, but without success, said Lemma.
Lemma said that he did not believe that students had attended the shootings.
"It seems like she did her best to do it in an area where no one else was," Lemma said.
The school was locked up, and Lemma said that he had informed the school community via the sound system. He said that the school was safe and that there was no active threat. Parents have also been notified via automated voicemail, reports WKMG, a CBS affiliate.
Lemma said that the girl's family had been warned. His identity is not yet unveiled.
"Everybody's belly is afraid of this tragedy," said Lemma.
Lemma said that his office continued to investigate the identity of the gun and how the girl had obtained it. He added that grief counselors were available at school and encouraged anyone with depression or mental health issues to ask for help.
"Let's do what we can to make sure we talk about it," Lemma said. "Do not close your eyes to it and prevent such situations from happening again."
