David Ayer, director of the 2016 Suicide Squad, took to Twitter to discuss his experience filming the film.

James Gunn’s upcoming release Suicide Squad the movie has awakened old feelings that Ayer needs to officially get out of his chest. From his three-page letter posted to his Twitter last Thursday, fans now know a little more about his experience working on the film.

Ayer’s letter follows a tweet from Screen Daily movie critic Tim Grierson who said, “Well, here’s something I didn’t expect to write: I absolutely loved it.” The Suicide SquadGrierson wrote. “A couple of times, watching the new movie, I’ve been like, ‘Yeah, David Ayer should just give up on the idea of this director’s cut.’”

As a writer / director, David Ayer is touched (End of shift, training day) or miss (Sabotage, Luminous). However, all of his films have a tone and style that I can admit is lacking in his version of the Suicide Squad. The 2016 film looks like it was premiered in an executive boardroom, so it’s understandable Ayer disowned it.

“The studio cut is not my film. Re-read it, “he wrote.” And my cut isn’t the 10-week director’s cut – it’s a fully mature montage of Lee Smith standing on the unbelievably [sic] work by John Gilroy. That’s all the brilliant Steven Price score, without a single radio song altogether. It has traditional character arcs, amazing performances, and solid 3rd act resolution.

Ayer noted that he is not an enemy. In fact, he praises Gunn’s version and all involved. “I am so proud of James and excited for the success to come. I support WB and am delighted that the franchise has the legs it needs, ”he wrote. “I support everyone, the actors, the team. Every movie is a miracle. And that of James [sic] a brilliant work will be the miracle of miracles.

Warner Bros. isn’t going to shell out the same amount of money they gave Zack Snyder to complete his cut of the Justice LeagueSo let’s hope Ayer’s Suicide Squad doesn’t require any rework or additional streaks. Can the director spark enough hype around #releasetheayercut to get HBO to nod?

The suicide squad is slated for a theatrical release in the United States and on the HBO Max streaming platform on August 6.
