Gunn’s R-rated superhero release only contains two post-credits scenes, but as he explains, the two have come up with bigger ideas for the DCEU.

After more than two hours and many R-rated gags, James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” ends on a high note, with a few caveats. The so-called Suicide Squad, although somewhat fractured, emerged victorious over most of their enemies (a blow to the fictional land of Corto Maltese, and also a large starfish-shaped alien named Starro), cemented his relationships (especially that of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and Idris Elba’s Bloodsport), and became a little wiser about the very people who control their fates.
It’s not exactly all wrapped up in a tidy bow, but it’s satisfying and silly and weird, all good things. Still, it’s not quite over, as Gunn rolls out a pair of post-credits scenes that both add to the ongoing story and set the stage for more wacky stuff to come. Going forward, the filmmaker details to IndieWire what he hopes viewers will take away from the two scenes, including some needed adjustments to how they perceive two of the film’s most indelible characters.

1. Weasel lives (and maybe isn’t such a bad guy)
The movie kicks off with a surprise: the revelation that master string shooter Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) actually dispatched of them Suicide Squads in Corto Maltese, none of which emerges from the first battles unscathed. Gunn kills a mess of his villains in the middle, but one death hits a bit harder: Weasel’s almost immediate drowning (played by Gunn’s own brother, Sean Gunn, who often brings to life, via a motion capture performance. , to the bizarre of his brother’s superheroes, including Rocket Raccoon in the MCU movies).
We are told that Weasel – who is, as the name suggests, a large, anthropomorphic weasel creature – is a child murderer and was jailed for killing as many as 27 children. But, is he… kinda cute? So when he drowns a few minutes after being dropped from a helicopter into the sea surrounding the fictional Latin American country of Corto Maltese, it’s a bit sad.
It’s even worse when Michael Rooker’s scholar tries to save him, pulling him out of the ocean and onto the beach to find that, yes, he’s still dead. But the first post-credits scene assumes something else: what if Weasel lived? As the big furry murderer wakes up on the beach, it’s hard not to feel a glimmer of happiness. It’s even better when he heads inland, where we assume he missed the big battle and is about to traumatize the people of Corto Maltese again, just as they try to get their lives back. in hand.
But Gunn is clear: maybe thinking that Weasel is cute isn’t a bad thing. He may be innocent!
“There are a lot of people in jail for crimes they didn’t commit,” Gunn said with a laugh. “Don’t you think that if there were 27 [dead] the kids and Weasel lived in the neighborhood, which you’ll blame Weasel. Is he guilty? I think this is a Project Innocence situation for Weasel and he really deserves to have the legal team that he probably didn’t have the first time around. I mean, he’s a cut above a Greyhound, if so, when it comes to his brain capacity.
As for his brother’s performance, Gunn loves him too. “Sean is amazing,” he says. “It was also cool to make a body that was built in the form of Sean [for once] so he can use his body for real. And the noises [he makes] are crazy. Sean’s noises are so funny, all with him. These noises are right, it made me laugh so hard. So he was great. It’s great to work with him!

2. Peacemaker gets another photo (including his own TV show)
The film’s second post-credits scene sees yet another resurrection, though this one is certainly less surprising than Weasel’s. Blame the company’s synergy for that one, because although the film ends with John Cena’s Peacekeeper being royally manhandled during one of the film’s most painful fight sequences, there is no has no real possibility that he is dead; after all, he’s going to be releasing a TV show soon! Gunn himself created the HBO Max series, titled “Peacemaker,” which is slated for release on the streamer in January 2022 for an eight-episode run.
But, given the way Cena’s character acts in the film – including killing beloved frontman Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) – the filmmaker knows he has an explanation. A show on this guy? Post-credits scene sets the stage: Bruised and beaten Peacekeeper aka Christopher Smith recovers in hospital when he meets two new compatriots who have already appeared in the film to help Amanda Waller: Steve Agee in the role by John Economos and Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt. As these two see, their new mission to deal with Peacemaker is Waller’s revenge, thanks to their small insurgency against their boss in the film’s final act.
He’s not going to make things easier, and his stubborn jerks are still intact, even at the end of the movie. This is, Gunn said, what “Peacemaker” the show will try to work on.
“I think a lot of the characters change a lot in this movie,” Gunn said. “Peacekeeper, he doesn’t, and if anything, he changes for the worse.” It is therefore a question of being able to live this adventure with this character who has a lot of real problems. Blood sports [Elba] problems take two hours and 15 minutes to process. Peacemaker’s problems take at least six and a half hours. So, it’s really about giving us a glimpse of that character.
And making sure Agee and Holland are highly visible during this scene is also essential, all in the hopes of reminding people that “Peacemaker” isn’t just about Cena’s character. “It’s an ensemble show that people don’t know about,” Gunn said. “But it’s about him. It’s about her relationship with the character of Danielle Brooks, as well as the character of Chukwudi Iwuji, and the character of Steve Agee, and the character of Jennifer Holland. It’s about this team of people and how they see the world and work together. And take the biggest asshole in the world and find out how he became the biggest asshole in the world?
